Panopto Adds Skype for Business Integration

Keeping Skype (News - Alert) videos on hand, like any call recording function, allows for exciting possibilities. Meetings can be recorded and viewed later, calls with customers can be referred to later as a means to get an order exactly right, and sometimes, regulators even insist on such things. Panopto recently added an exciting note to Skype for Business, as it recently upgraded its platform for video content management to include support for Skype videos, allowing users to search archived Skype recordings.

While more communications are taking place over video these days, this can also mean a problem for users as video often represents large file sizes that need specialized storage. That can make finding it in the future difficult, as users try to remember what conversation took place on what day and try to recover files chronologically, a process which doesn't always work so well. Worse, as some have discovered, current operations save conferences, but don't make these readily available to other users. Recordings are currently saved as MP4 files to the hard drive of the user recording said conference. This means the file is not formatted for the best streaming and also can't be readily searched for.

Enter Panopto, which automates the uploading process from not just Skype, but also other conferencing systems like GoToMeeting. With manual uploads eliminated, there's less opportunity for recording uploads to fall through the cracks in the system, and it makes it easier for other users to search and find that content. Further Panopto upgrades provide augmentations in integration—allowing the information to be accessed and used by other systems like customer relationship management (CRM) tools—as well as accommodating the shift from hardware-based systems to software-based ones that can be accessed remotely as need be.

Akin to the old Zen concept about trees falling in the woods, if someone makes a Skype recording, and no one can access it later, was there ever really a meeting? The value of a Skype recording isn't just the ideas and collaboration that went into it in the first place, but rather the ability to later access those ideas. No matter what the purpose—for reinforcement, for regulatory purposes, or even just to laugh at what people used to think a good idea looked like before technology and the market knocked it into a cocked hat—being able to refer back to a meeting is half the point of having it.

With tools like Panopto on hand, it's a lot easier to get the fullest value out of a Skype meeting. Not just for today, but for all of a business' tomorrows as well. Those recordings can mean the difference between opportunities gained and lost.
